What's the difference to Word with an AI add-on?

An AI add-on only sees the text you've selected — not your research question, chapter outline, citation style, or sources. Thynk is built from the ground up for theses: the AI knows your entire project, always proposes changes as a reviewable suggestion instead of editing automatically, and only works with the sources you allow — no more copy-pasting between Word, Zotero, and ChatGPT.

Do I need my own API key?

Only if you want one. With the Thesis Pass or the subscription, AI usage is included — you need no Anthropic account of your own and everything is billed through us. If you would rather pay Anthropic directly, use BYOK: the app is free and you connect your own key. You can also use Thynk entirely without AI.
